Lead Crystal Batteries
By greenza
There is a new type of battery available on the market for the renewable energies sector. Its called a Lead Crystal battery.
The Lead Crystal battery has many advantages over the standard Lead Acid battery. First off though, here is the major difference.
A Lead Crystal battery uses a special SIO2 composite electrolyte to replace the very dangerous sulfuric acid solution of traditional lead-acid batteries. The electrolyte in Crystal Lead batteries is non-toxic and does not have an odour. Even if the electrolyte comes into contact with the human body, it will not cause any harm.
There are also vast advantages to using Lead Crystal batteries over conventional Lead Acid batteries. Here are some of the advantages;
-
Longer battery life.
Lead Acid battery's charge and discharge cycles are about 300 to 350 times, and this is only to 50% of the rated capacity. Lead Crystal batteries on the other hand can discharge to 60% of the rated capacity and the charge/discharge cycle life is 700 – 800 times. This results in a Lead Crystal battery having an expected useful life of more than double that of Lead Acid batteries. This translates into an expected life of between 6 and 10 years, as opposed to an expected useful life of a Lead Acid battery of 2 to 3 years. -
High-rate of discharge.
General Lead Acid batteries can only discharge 3C, while the largest lead crystal battery can discharge up to 10C. -
Extreme discharge performance.
A Lead Crystal battery can be discharged to 0 Volts, and will still restore to the full rated capacity, while a Lead Acid battery will restore with difficulty, and more than likely will not recover at all to rated capacity. This effectively increases the usable battery capacity of Lead Crystal batteries by 25%, if compared with it’s Lead Acid counter-part. -
Charge performance.
Lead Crystal batteries normally only require a charge time of 20% of the time required to charge a Lead Acid battery.
-
Low temperature performance.
Lead crystal battery temperaturescan function in temperatures of -40 to +65 degrees Celsius. At temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius, the batterydischarge can still reach 87%.Lead Acid batteries on the other hand would normally loose their discharge ability under sub-zero conditions. -
Shelf life
Lead Crystal batteries discharge very slowly under fully charged conditions. Even after being stored for two years, Lead Crystal batteries can be immediately used without any charging. Some Crystal Lead series can keep more than 99.9% of thier capacity even after a two month period of not being used.
-
Safe to transport.
Unlike Lead Acid batteries, Lead Crystal batteries are classified as non-hazardous devices and are safe to transport by land, sea, or air. This unique feature is primarily due to the electrolyte composition of the lead crystal battery, which is non-corrosive.
-
Lead Crystal batteries are greener.
Lead Crystal batteries use new processes, new materials, and new formulations. There is no mist or harmful gaseous emissions. The basic electrolyte is neutral, non-corrosive, and cannot filter into the ground. Lead Crystal batteries therefore are much healthier on the environment and are in line with increasing environmental protection standards.
With all of these advantages, it really makes these batteries worth the little bit extra, not to mention they are also that much easier to install and safer to use!!
I am personally going to change my batteries over to these Lead Crystal ones...its got all of the pros above, plus it'l last longer than Lead Acid. Therefore the cost of my system will be reduced! Now who doesnt like savin bucks! :)
If the Crystal is still too much, why not choose a Lead one?
